What Is XAUUSD? 5 Steps to Trade Gold on MT5
By Fernando Funicelli · Founder of Lucky Dogs Trading Systems

XAUUSD is the code for gold priced in US dollars: the number on your screen tells you how many dollars one troy ounce of gold costs right now. In MetaTrader 5 the same asset shows up as XAUUSD, GOLD or XAUUSD+, and you can trade it both ways, up and down.
You go to bed with gold flat. You wake up, open your phone, and the chart has moved all night: up, back down, through a level. The move you were waiting for happened at 3 a.m., without you.
That is how many people meet gold. They either miss the move because they were asleep, or they get a scare from an order left open with no stop. Gold gives no warning: it moves when the news hits, at any hour.
This guide fixes both problems. First, what XAUUSD is and what moves the price. Then how to add gold to MT5, what 1 lot is worth and how to trade XAUUSD in 5 steps. At the end, you will see the difference between trading by hand and letting a robot work the rules for you, even while you sleep.
What is XAUUSD?
XAUUSD works like a currency pair: the first code is what you buy or sell, and the second is the currency it is quoted in. Here, gold against the dollar.
XAU, USD and the troy ounce
- XAU is the international code for gold, in the same system that gives USD to the dollar and EUR to the euro.
- USD is the US dollar.
- The unit is the troy ounce, about 31.1 grams, the measure used in the precious metals market.
So if you are asking which asset XAUUSD is, the answer is gold. The number on the screen is what one ounce costs in dollars. If it goes up, gold got more expensive. If it falls, gold got cheaper.
Are XAUUSD and GOLD the same thing?
Yes. Each broker names the same asset whatever it likes: XAUUSD, GOLD, XAUUSD+, XAUUSD.r and other suffixed variations. In all of them, the price is gold in dollars. Some brokers quote 2 decimal places, others 3.
This matters when you pick a robot. Our EAs ask for just this: gold quoted in USD, under any name. A robot that only recognizes "XAUUSD" spelled one exact way will not trade on a broker that calls gold something else.
How XAUUSD works: what moves the price of gold
Gold pays no interest and no dividends. Its price lives on demand, and demand shifts with five forces. They explain why gold sometimes sits still for hours and then moves in minutes.
- The dollar. Because gold is priced in dollars, a weaker dollar tends to make gold more expensive, and a stronger dollar tends to weigh on it.
- Interest rates and the Fed. The Fed is the US central bank. When rates rise, holding gold, which yields nothing, gets less attractive. When the market expects lower rates, gold usually gains strength. Every Fed decision moves the price.
- Inflation. Many people buy gold to protect their purchasing power. An inflation report that surprises the market usually moves gold right away.
- Crises and fear. In war, a banking crisis or political tension, gold becomes a safe haven: people who are afraid buy gold.
- US economic data. The best known is NFP (non-farm payrolls), the monthly US jobs report. In the minutes around its release, price can jump, and the spread (the gap between the buy price and the sell price) widens.
For a trader, the summary is simple: gold reacts to US news, at any hour, and it moves hard. Movement is what pays the person who trades. And movement at any hour is what wears out the person who trades by hand.
Why so many people trade gold on MetaTrader 5
- It moves. Gold often travels a long way within a single day, which opens opportunity for short-term trading, from minutes to hours.
- Almost around the clock. At most brokers, gold trades Monday to Friday almost nonstop, with one short break per day. It usually moves most when London and New York are open. Your broker's exact schedule is in the symbol specification, which you will see below.
- You can win both ways. You buy when you think it will rise and sell when you think it will fall. Falling prices pay too.
- You can start small. The minimum lot (the size of the trade), usually 0.01, lets you trade gold with a small account.
And why MetaTrader 5? Because it is the free platform that many forex brokers offer, it runs on desktop and mobile, and it is where trading robots, called Expert Advisors (EAs), run. If your question is which platform to use to trade XAUUSD, MT5 covers both needs: trading by hand and automating.
How to add XAUUSD to MT5 (and what to do when it is missing)
- Open the Market Watch window with Ctrl+M. It is the list of symbols on the left side of the screen.
- Click the + at the bottom of the list and type XAU. If nothing shows up, type GOLD.
- Pick gold against the dollar. It is added to Market Watch.
- Drag the symbol onto the chart area, or right-click it and choose Chart Window.
The full path, with every symbol your broker offers, is in the right-click menu of Market Watch, under Symbols (Ctrl+U).

If gold does not show up, check three things:
- The name has a suffix. XAUUSD+, XAUUSD.r or XAUUSDm are the same gold. Search for "XAU" and for "GOLD", not for the full name.
- The symbol exists but is hidden. Open Symbols (Ctrl+U), find gold and choose to show it in Market Watch.
- Your account type does not include metals. Some accounts do not unlock gold. Your broker fixes it by changing the account type.
Each window is also covered step by step in the official MetaTrader 5 Market Watch help.
How much is 1 lot of gold worth?
At most brokers, 1 lot of gold is 100 ounces. So every dollar that gold moves is worth 100 dollars on 1 lot, and the math scales down with smaller lots:
| Lot | Ounces (100-ounce contract) | Gold moves $1 |
|---|---|---|
| 0.01 | 1 | $1 |
| 0.10 | 10 | $10 |
| 1.00 | 100 | $100 |

Leverage does not change these values: every $1 move is worth the same at 1:100 or at 1:500. The only thing that changes is the margin your broker sets aside to open the position. See leverage in forex: what 1:500 changes (and what it doesn't) and what 1 pip is worth in forex and gold.
Before you trade, check your broker's contract. Right-click the symbol in Market Watch and choose Specification. It shows the contract size, the digits, the minimum volume and the trading sessions.

Along with the lot come the costs of every trade:
- The spread, which you pay on every entry and which widens on strong news.
- The commission, on some accounts, charged per lot.
- The swap, the fee for holding a position overnight. In general, a trade that closes before the server's day rollover pays no swap.
How to trade XAUUSD on MT5 in 5 steps
- Open a MetaTrader 5 account of the hedging type. A hedging account accepts more than one position on the same asset, including a buy and a sell at the same time. It is the type our EAs require. If you are just starting, open a demo account first, with play money, to get the hang of it.
- Find the symbol and open the chart. Ctrl+M, search for "XAU" or "GOLD" and Chart Window, as in the section above.
- Check the specification. Contract size, minimum volume, digits and sessions. To see the live spread, right-click in Market Watch and turn on the Spread column.
- Place the order with a stop and a target already set. Press F9 to open the New Order window. Choose the volume, fill in the Stop Loss (the price at which the loss is closed) and the Take Profit (the price at which the profit is taken) and click buy or sell at market. The stop and the target travel with the order to the broker's server: if your computer shuts down, they stay there.
- Follow it and close it. The position shows up on the Trade tab of the Toolbox (Ctrl+T). It closes on its own at the stop or the target, or you close it earlier by right-clicking the position. Write down every result: it is your trading journal.

Every field of the order window is explained in the official MetaTrader 5 help on opening trades.
Trade gold by hand or with a robot?
The 5 steps work. The problem is what they ask of you: being in front of the screen when gold moves. And gold moves when it wants to.
| By hand | With a robot (EA) | |
|---|---|---|
| Screen time | You have to be watching | It watches for you |
| Overnight | The move passes without you | It is there |
| Discipline | Depends on your day | The same rule on every trade |
| Emotion | Fear and rush weigh on the decision | It feels nothing |
| News day | You decide in a panic | The rule decided beforehand |
| Before risking money | Hard to measure what you would do | Test with real ticks in the Strategy Tester |
Gold does not wait for you to wake up. A robot trades its rules all night, the same way on the first trade and on the thousandth.
In MetaTrader 5, the trading robot is called an Expert Advisor: a program that runs inside the platform and opens and closes orders on its own, with fixed rules. You choose the robot, turn it on and follow it on the dashboard.
What a gold robot needs to have
- A stop on every trade. Best of all is when the order reaches the broker's server with the stop already attached: if your computer shuts down, the protection stays there.
- No martingale. Martingale means doubling the lot after every loss to win everything back at once. In a serious robot, the lot only grows when the balance grows. See why martingale looks perfect until it breaks.
- Gold under any name. XAUUSD, GOLD, XAUUSD+: the robot has to recognize your broker's gold without you touching anything.
- The broker's time zone detected on its own. Every broker has a server clock. A robot that gets the time zone wrong trades at the wrong hour.
- Out of the way on strong news. Fed decisions and NFP bring jumps and wide spreads. A good gold robot stays out of those moments or has a news filter.
Use these five criteria to compare gold robots for MT5, side by side, and any other one that shows up in front of you.
How our EAs trade gold
Our algorithms trade only gold, on MetaTrader 5. All three recognize gold under any name, set your broker's time zone without any setup and use no martingale. Each gain increases the lot of the next trade: it is compounding, on autopilot. What changes between them is how they find the moment.
Collie Gold, which watches gold day and night, made +586% in 2025 on the Moderate profile, in the test with real ticks. It opens short baskets, groups of entries with the same lot: the typical basket stays open for 8 minutes, and 82% close in under 1 hour. In the test, 2,006 of 2,028 baskets closed in profit. Fed and NFP days are left out. It is the automation for anyone who used to miss the overnight move: you sleep, it watches.
Pitbull Gold, which enters with the target and stop on the server, made +478% in 2025 on the Balanced profile, in the test with real ticks, and closed in profit 21 of 21 months in 2025 and 2026. It waits for gold to confirm the move and only then enters, with the target and the stop already on the broker's server. One entry per trade, no grid.
Beagle Gold, where you choose the risk of each trade, made +185% in 2025 on the Moderate profile, in the test with real ticks, with 21 of 22 months in profit in 2025 and 2026. You choose from 1% to 5% of the balance per trade, and it has at most two trades open at the same time.
You do not have to take our word for it. All three have a free demo: you run 2025 and 2026 in the Strategy Tester, on real ticks (every price change your broker recorded), with your broker's data, and you see every trade. And every number on the site follows the 5 rules we use to publish every number.
Frequently asked questions
Is XAUUSD a scam?
No. XAUUSD is just the code for gold priced in dollars, traded at brokers all over the world. The scam lives in the promise around it: "2% a day", "a robot that never loses", "deposit with me and I will trade for you". Before you trust any automation, see how to tell whether a forex robot works.
Is XAUUSD worth trading?
On MT5, XAUUSD is more for trading than for holding for years. It moves a lot, both ways, and that is opportunity for anyone who trades with rules: a defined stop, a lot sized to the account and a plan that does not change with the mood of the day. People who want those rules without spending the day at the screen use a robot.
Is buying XAUUSD buying real gold?
No. At most MT5 brokers, XAUUSD is a contract on the price of gold, a CFD (contract for difference): you win or lose on the price change, but you do not receive the metal. That is why you can sell first and win when the price falls.
What are the XAUUSD trading hours?
At most brokers, Monday to Friday, almost around the clock, with one short break per day. The exact schedule for yours is in the symbol specification: right-click gold in Market Watch and choose Specification.
How much do I need to start trading gold on MT5?
By hand, the minimum lot is usually 0.01, which at most brokers is 1 ounce. With our EAs, you start from 100 USD on Pitbull Gold, 300 USD on Collie Gold and 1,000 USD on Beagle Gold, and the lot grows along with the balance.
Can I trade XAUUSD on my phone?
By hand, yes: the MetaTrader 5 app opens charts and orders. A robot runs on the MetaTrader of your computer or of a VPS, a cloud computer that stays on 24 hours (how to install an EA in MT5). Your phone follows every trade the robot makes, on the same account.
Now you know what XAUUSD is, what moves the price and how to trade it on MT5. What is left is choosing whether you trade by hand or let an automation work for you. See the three gold robots for MT5, side by side, download the free demo of the one that fits you and run 2025 and 2026 in your own MetaTrader. If what bothers you is gold moving while you sleep, start with Collie Gold.
