Do Forex Robots Work? 7 Scam Signs and a 15-Minute Test
By Fernando Funicelli · Founder of Lucky Dogs Trading Systems

Do forex robots work? They do when three things are true: the rules are clear, the test was done the right way and the result is something you can check yourself. Then the robot really works, and you can prove it. When one of the three is missing, you are not buying a robot: you are buying a promise.
The promise usually arrives like this: an ad in the middle of a video, a chart climbing smoothly, "2% a day", a screenshot of an account with a six-figure balance and a buy button with a countdown.
The problem is that, from the outside, a good robot and an empty promise look the same. Both show a rising chart and a big percentage. The difference shows up later, with your money in the account and the robot running.
This guide shows you how to tell one from the other before you pay, without relying on anyone's word. Not even ours.
Do trading robots work? What they do and what they don't
In MetaTrader 5, the trading robot is called an Expert Advisor (EA): a program that runs inside the platform and opens and closes orders on its own, with fixed rules for entry, lot size, stop and target. It does not get tired, does not feel fear and does not skip a trade, even at 3 a.m.
That is its strength, and also its limit. If the rules have an edge over the market, the robot repeats the edge without deviation. If they do not, it repeats the mistake with the same discipline. An expert advisor works on MT5 like any trading robot: only as well as the rules it carries.
So the right question is not whether robots work. It is whether this robot's rules work, and how you check.
Is a forex robot a scam? The 7 warning signs
A forex robot is not a scam by nature. The scam is the promise around it. These seven signs apply to any robot and any expert advisor, and each one comes with the question you ask the seller.
- "100% win rate" or "never loses". Every real system has losing trades. When the loss does not show, it is hidden, usually in an open position the robot never closes. Ask: what was the worst month, and what was the biggest loss on a single trade?
- Hidden martingale. Martingale means doubling the lot after every loss to win everything back on the next trade. The curve looks beautiful for months. Then comes a long move in one direction, something gold does, and the doubled lot takes the account in one go. Ask: does the lot increase after a loss? The right answer is no: the lot only grows when the balance grows.
- No stop. A trade without a stop depends on price coming back. Sometimes it does not. Ask: where is the stop, and does it travel with the order to the broker's server?
- A short test, or one picked by hand. One good year says little. Be wary of a test that starts right after a big drop or ends right before one. Ask: can I test any period I choose, including the most recent one?
- A test with bad data. In the open-prices or 1-minute OHLC modes, the tester guesses the path price took inside each chart bar. On a fast robot, that invents profit that never existed. Ask: was the test done on "Every tick based on real ticks"?
- A screenshot instead of an account. A screenshot can be edited in a minute. A result you can check comes from an account read straight from the broker, with the full history, or from a test you run yourself. Ask: where can I see the account, with every trade?
- A promise of fixed income. "2% a day, every day" is not how the market works. A good robot has great months, ordinary months and weak months. What counts is the sum. Ask: can I see the month-by-month result, including the weak months?
Sign 2 has a look you can recognize on the chart. The balance only changes when a trade closes, and the equity also shows what is open. In a martingale, the balance climbs smoothly while the equity sinks:

The full math, with the table of the lot after each loss, is in martingale strategy in trading: what it is and why it breaks.
How to know if a robot works: the 15-minute test on MT5
The strongest proof is the one you run yourself. MetaTrader 5 has a built-in simulator, the Strategy Tester, which replays your broker's price history and shows what the robot would have done, trade by trade. A serious seller lets you test before you pay, with a free demo. This is also how you backtest an EA properly. Here is the short version; the full roadmap, from the seller's page to the decision, is in how to test a trading robot before you buy, step by step.
- Download the free demo from the robot's page. It runs in your MetaTrader's Strategy Tester. First time with an EA? See how to install an expert advisor (EA) in MT5.
- Open the Strategy Tester with Ctrl+R.
- Choose the robot, the symbol and the most recent period, such as 2025 and 2026: it is the market the robot will meet tomorrow.
- Under Modelling, choose "Every tick based on real ticks". It is the most faithful mode: it uses every price change your broker recorded.
- Enter the deposit you will really use and your account's leverage.
- Click Start. The first test downloads the tick history and takes longer; the next ones are fast.

Every field is explained in the official Strategy Tester documentation.
What to look at in the report: 5 numbers
- Net profit and number of trades. Many trades give more confidence than a few trades with a high profit. With few, luck and rules look the same.
- Profit factor, the total won divided by the total lost. Above 1, the robot wins more than it loses. A sky-high factor with few trades deserves the same suspicion as the previous item.
- Maximum drawdown: the biggest distance between an account peak and the next low. Ask yourself: could I watch this without turning the robot off?
- Month by month. A consistent system wins in most months. A whole year made in a single month is a bet.
- Equity, not just balance. If the balance climbs smoothly and the equity sinks from time to time, an open position is holding a loss. It is the picture of sign 2. The difference between balance and equity, with numbers, is in margin level, free margin and stop out in MT5.

Download, set up, run and read these five numbers: that is the 15-minute test. It is worth more than any screenshot.
Are forex robots worth it? The buyer's math
A forex robot is worth it when the math works: what you pay against what it does for you. And what it does is not small.
- Time away from the screen. The hours you would spend watching the chart come back to you.
- Discipline. The rule has no mood swings, does not try to take revenge on the market after a loss and does not skip the entry out of fear.
- Presence. The robot is there at night, at lunchtime and on the day you forgot.
- Compounding. In a robot that sizes the lot from the balance, every gain increases the next trade, on autopilot.
To be worth its price, it has to pass the basics: a free demo to test, a stop on every trade, a lot that grows only with the balance, support and updates. When it is time to pay, see how to buy an EA on the MQL5 Market, with rental and activations. The same math applies if you are asking whether an expert advisor is worth buying.
And if the question is whether a trading robot is a good investment, remember what you are buying: a tool. The money stays in your account, at your broker, in your name. If someone asks you to deposit with them "so the robot can trade", that is not a trading robot. That is handing your money to a stranger.
What to ask before you pay
- The strategy in one sentence. Not the code: the idea. Does it follow trends? Trade breakouts? Close fast? If the seller cannot explain it, nobody can.
- How the lot is calculated. Fixed, a percentage of the balance or growing with profit. Never growing after a loss.
- Where the stop sits. On the server, from the entry.
- The free demo, so you can run it in your own MetaTrader.
- A live account, read straight from the broker, with the full history.
- Support and updates. A robot with no owner abandons you at the first change in the market.
If the seller dodges two of these questions, you already have your answer.
How our EAs pass this test
We ask these questions of our own EAs before we sell them. The answers:
- All three have a free demo. You run 2025 and 2026 in the Strategy Tester, on real ticks, with your broker's data, before you pay.
- None uses martingale. The lot only grows when the balance grows: it is compounding, never loss recovery.
- All three trade gold on MetaTrader 5. If you are new to this asset, see what XAUUSD is and how it moves.
And one result for each, in the test with real ticks:
- Pitbull Gold, which enters with the target and stop already on the server: 21 of 21 months in profit in 2025 and 2026, and +478% in 2025 on the Balanced profile. One entry per trade, no grid and no averaging down. It is the exact opposite of signs 2 and 3.
- Collie Gold: 2,006 of 2,028 baskets closed in profit. It is a grid without martingale: every entry in a basket has the same lot, and every basket has a stop.
- Beagle Gold: 21 of 22 months in profit in 2025 and 2026. Stop on the server from the first second and at most two open trades.
Every number on the site follows the 5 rules we use to publish every number. And the account results we publish come straight from the broker, trade by trade, with nothing typed by hand: see the results read straight from the broker.
Frequently asked questions
Are forex robots legit?
They are, when you check. Three tests settle it: it passes the 7 signs, the demo does well on the most recent period with real ticks, and there is an account read straight from the broker. If it passes all three, your confidence comes from what you saw, not from what you were told.
Do I need to understand trading to use a robot?
No. With a well-made EA, you drag the robot onto the chart, choose the profile and turn on Algo Trading, the button that lets robots run in MT5. On ours, choosing the profile is the entire setup, and the whole thing takes about 10 minutes.
Is an AI trading robot better?
Not necessarily. "Artificial intelligence" in an ad says nothing about the result. What matters is the same as for any robot: clear rules, a test with real ticks and an account you can check. The Strategy Tester report does not know whether the rules came from an AI or a person, and it is the report that answers.
Is there a free forex robot that works?
There may be, and the test is the same: a zero price does not change the 7 signs. What a serious seller gives away is the demo, so you can run it before you pay.
Do forex robots work on a phone?
The robot runs on the MetaTrader 5 of your computer or of a VPS, a cloud computer that stays on 24 hours. The phone app does not run robots, but it shows every trade the robot makes, on the same account.
Do they work on indices or crypto?
Our EAs trade gold on MetaTrader 5, at forex brokers, not stock indices or crypto. But the 7 signs and the test with real ticks apply to any robot, in any market.
Do forex robots work? They do when you check. Start with the test: compare the three EAs side by side and download the free demo. If martingale and trades with no stop were your fear, start with Pitbull Gold: every entry is born with the target and the stop on the server.
